Pregnancy Belly | Vanilla Buttercream Frosting

Vanilla Buttercream Frosting from NewMamaDiaries.blogspot.com
This is a total pregnancy craving post, I make no other excuses.  I won’t be putting this icing on a cake, brownies, cookies, or anywhere else but my mouth, lol!  Although I do have to say that I’ve always had a love of icings and frosting.  It goes hand in hand with my love of batters.  Unfortunately, right now I’m having to abstain from eating my batters, since eating raw eggs are a no-no during pregnancy.  Can October come soon enough!?  Haha…just kidding, but I am super excited to meet my kid and eat cake batter and cookie dough again.  I know, I know, you say you can just make the eggless kind or dip and dabble in the batter or dough before you put the egg in.  NOT THE SAME!  I need the raw eggs!  Okay, okay…let me tune it down a bit and get back on subject.
So I’m kind of a plain Jane when it is comes to icing, frosting, and fillings.  I’m not a huge fan of fruit flavored ones or ones with coconut or any other gritty ingredient in them.  I stick to good old fashioned vanilla, so that is what I will be sharing with you today.
IMG_0783
What you need:
1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
1 and 1/4 stick of unsalted butter
1/2 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoons whipping cream or milk
IMG_0779IMG_0780
How you do it:
In a standing mixer fitted with a whisk, mix together sugar and butter. Mix on low speed until well blended and then increase speed to medium and beat for another 3 minutes.
Add vanilla and cream and continue to beat on medium speed for 1 minute more, adding more cream if needed for spreading consistency.
*Careful not to over mix and keep the speed of your mixer no higher than medium.
Takes less than 15 mins to put together.
IMG_0781IMG_0782
This recipe only makes about a cup of frosting, so if you are using it to ice a cake double or triple the ingredients.  I use this recipe for my quick sugar fix, not for actual baked goods.  It sets up nicely and would work great on a cake or cupcakes.  You can add cocoa to it or any flavor you wish.  The texture is light, fluffy, and smooth.

Enjoy!

Beauty Tip | Hand & Nailcare

Nailcare - Best methods for taking care of your nails from NewMamaDiaries.blogspot.com
This is yet another post that I have been meaning to write for the longest!  I feel like I've written this post a hundred times, but every time I look at my drafts its still there and empty!  What gives?!

Anyhow, let's get to it!  Nailcare, just like skin and haircare are very important.  All too often we don't give our hands the TLC they need.  In recent years, I have been pretty gun-ho about taking care of my nails, even thoughout my rigorous military training.  I'll say that I grow my nails out good and long about 4 times a year.  Once I grow them out, I usually wear them long until I break one and them its like a dominoe affect and they all break!  I do take a prenatal right now, which is really good for hair, skin, and nails, but even before I became pregnant I took a multi-vitamin and hair, skin, and nails one.  I will say that while the vitamins make a difference, the major thing that I do to enhance and maintain nail growth and health is a good diet, keeping them filed, and coated with a protective, strengthening polish of some sort.

I file my nails at least once if not twice a week and apply a protective top coat at least once a week.  Right now I'm using the Sally Hansen Triple Strong.
I really like it, although it tends to be a little more pricey than some of the other Sally Hansen products, its good stuff.  It has Epoxy, Calcium, and Titanium and is in essence an advanced nail fortifier.  The con of this product is that even though the bottle says two coats, you really only need one, because as the product ages it gets thick.  Also, after the product has dried, it doesn't create a longer wearing surface and lent tends to get into it.  This product also doesn't wear for very long at all, if anything no longer than 72 hours and then it needs to be removed and reapplied.  Now I know this sounds like a lot of cons, but the pros of it outweigh the cons.  I find that my peeling-prone nails tend to not peel as much and feel much stronger with using this product.  They also seem less prone to breaking and are overall stronger.
http://bbw.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/pBBW1-14786821enh-z8.jpg
So for me, I keep it pretty basic, a nail file and some clear top coat.  I do occasionally paint my fingernails, and when I do I always use a base.  I do two layers of base coat, then two layers of polish, and then a top coat.  If I use Triple Strong as my base coat, then I do one layer of it and keep the same routine for the polish and top coat.
I do my toenails about once or twice a month, and keep the maintenance on them minimal.  I clip my toenails, sometimes file them, do a base coat, two or three layers of polish, and a top coat.  I have a little bit of left over fungus on my right big toe, so every so often I use a little bit of Lamisil.  Its been clearing up recently and I let my feet air out a lot to keep them dry.  My toenails grow extremely fast, like werewolf fast, so I typically have to do them twice a month.  Its a little harder while pregnant, but I get it done.  I mean come on now...it is summer and I have to keep my feet right!
As far as cleaning and moisturization of both finger and toenails, I wash (of course!) and moisturize daily.  My hands are always getting washed, so in turn they are always getting moisturized.  I moisturize my feet after showering and most nights before bed.  In the winter time, my feet have to be moisturized before bed, because I hate getting in bed with dry feet.  Ugh...it gives me the heebie geebies!  In the summer, my feet tend to sweat, so I lighten it up on the moisturizers overall, so not every single night I moisturize them if I don't shower that night.  However, if I shower or soak my feet then they get moisturized.
One last thing, I never buff my nails.  Even though I don’t do it, I felt it was important to cover the topic…at least from my perspective.  The only time I have had my nails buffed is at the salon and when I use one of those four-sided nail file/buffers. I recommend using one of the four-sided buffers, unless you have very rigid nails or nails that peeled a lot.  Even though my nails tend to peel, I don’t like sanding down my nail beds.  Of course you can choose to just buff the part of your nail that is rough or peels.  I like the four-sided buffer, because oftentimes you can get a really nice shiny polished finish that will last you a few days, especially if you don’t have time to apply a clear coat or prefer not to.
http://simplyattractive.com/images/P/IMG_0703-01-01.jpg
These will typically run you around $4-$8.  A lot of times you see people selling these in kits at the mall.  You know those little kiosks in the middle?  Yep, they run out and try to grab your hands to demo on and then tell you it’s a miracle product, charging you $20-$30 for the kit.  All you really need it some lotion, cuticle oil (or any type of oil, olive or coconut is good), and one of these files.  Should cost you half the amount they try to sell it to your for.

My nails
So if anything to take away from my post, its maintenance and consistency.  If you dedicate just a few minutes once or twice a week to your nails, then they will not only look good, but be strong and healthy.  Keep in mind that if your nails are week, seem to break easily, not grow, or have white spots on them, this can suggest a vitamin deficiency, so you should consult your physcian.  It might just be that you need to change your diet, adding more protein into it and increasing your water intake.  I’m not a doctor, so I’m just speaking off of what I know.  Your doctor would be able to pinpoint exactly what’s going on with you and give you the correct guidance to improve your nails.  Oftentimes, your hair, skin, and nails tell a story of your overall health, so pay attention to all three and consult your physician if something seems off or not quite right.
Hope this was helpful!

Extra, Extra, Extra...Read All About It | Google's New Commenting Policy

Commenting Policy

New Google Commenting/Spam Policy

Aye yigh yigh...we have come to another one of those ill-fated topics that unfortunately manage to give us bloggers a hard time:  Comments.  It has come to my attention that Google has implemented a new policy regarding commenting.  Unfortunately this means some changes will be taking place not only on my blog, but many other bloggers as well.

I have already come across two blogs that have posted about this, and first I blew it off not thinking it was a big deal.  I mean we're always getting some notice saying the Privacy Policy has changed or some other policy.  However, as I scrolled through the comments and research a little more I realized that this was probably something pretty important to pay attention to.  As I continue to try to grow my blog daily, I look for ways to maximize interaction with readers and visitors, and comments are my main way of doing that.

Thus far, in the almost three months my blog has been up I have had no issues with spam comments.  I know  more seasoned blogs with higher number of visitors get more comments and thus, probably get spammed a lot more than little ole me.  Well I don't want to wait until my blog is seasoned and I'm in those same ranks before taking action, I like to be as proactive as possible.

In one of the posts I read on a blog I follow, the blogger initiated the Google + commenting widget, which takes away the ability for anonymous comments.  While I think this is a great idea, I don't use my Google + for blog networking purposes, I use to connect with people in my personal life.  To be honest I don't use it much at all, because I've never liked it.  Looks like its time for me to get with the program.  Nonetheless, I'm not sure what direction or action I want to take right now with this whole commenting thing, but I'm glad I know about it.  I also read another post about a concern for the CommentLuv widget that many Wordpress blogs have on them.  Right now, there is no clear answer on if this widget will somehow violate the new policy and even those comments (with links) will be considered spam.

Possible spam comment:  "Thanks for the hosting!  Have a great weekend." ~Your Blog Name Here as a hyperlink - I'm even notorious for this one, because I hate linking up and leaving.  I always try to leave some word of gratitude to the blogger.  - Now I will only be leaving relevant and poignant comments, even for link parties.

Good comment: "Great recipe for the fruit salad! It looks absolutely delicious.  I have been looking all over for a good recipe and now I've found one.  I can't wait to try this out, as well as some of the other salad recipes you shared." - This comment goes into detail about the post, and doesn't have any backlinks or key words that would trigger (In my opinion) a spam tracker.
The main issue with the commenting policy is the algorithm used in it.  It recognizes short and sweet comments and those with links as spam.  This is especially disconcerting to me, because I like to include a link to my blog in my signature when I leave comments.  I feel like it looks professional, since my signature is pretty much like my business card.

If you want more information on the policy visit this informative link.  It gives a good breakdown of the policy overall and has a nifty video included about it too.

Until next time folks!

Strawberry~Honey Greek Yogurt Smoothie

Strawberry~Honey Greek Yogurt Smoothie from NewMamaDiaries.blogspot.com
I love nothing more than to make smoothies.  Next to sweet tea, strawberry lemonade, and Sprite, smoothies are my next favorite drink.  I have a good-to smoothie, which is my mixed berry one, but I decided to switch it up and do something different this time around.
IMG_0768
I had some strawberries that were on their last leg and decided to make a quick and easy smoothie out of them.  I also wanted to get a protein fix, so I threw in some vanilla greek yogurt and vanilla all-natural whey protein powder.
IMG_0770
I cooled the entire smoothie down with some ice, stuck a straw in it and enjoyed for my late night snack.  Baby really seemed to love this smoothie, because within seconds of drinking it, baby started rolling, kicking, jabbing, and dancing up a storm in my belly.  I guess baby liked that boost of protein, because there was a party in my tummy for a good 15-20 minutes.
IMG_0771
What you need:
8 Strawberries
1/4 c Orange Juice
1/2 c Greek Yogurt
2 tbsp Honey
1 tbsp Vanilla Extract
1/2 c of Ice
1 oz Whey Protein Powder *optional*
You will have plenty to share with this recipe. I will be enjoying the remainder of mines for breakfast.  This smoothie is good for anytime of the day which is the one thing I really like about it.  Its healthy, refreshing, thick, and nutritious…everything I need to give baby what it needs.
Enjoy this frothy delight!

Pretty Little Liars Season 4 Recap...so far

Okay, so I have totally fallen off of my PLL weekly updates!  I really have no excuse, besides being too lazy to type up the recaps.

So let's get to it:

Everyone is looking extremely suspect right now!  "A" could be anyone, and by anyone I mean any of the girls, parents, boyfriends, friends, etc.  I do still think that "A" is somewhat random, but somehow connected to all of the girls in some way.  There has been a lot of talk of Allie, but the storyline with her is slow and a little all over the place in my opinion.  It seems as if this girl was into an awful before her death, things that no 15 or 16 should have been into.  I mean from her possibly being pregnant when she died, to hanging out with college kids, manipulating nearly everyone around her including her mother, the whole mask thing...its crazy!  Now we have Spencer on this rampage to find out how all this ties in, but to me her and Toby seem the most suspicious.  I can't shake the feeling that Spencer, of all the girls, has the strongest ties to "A".  Her sister who has been in and out of the entire show's storyline throughout the seasons has popped up as a player in this whole "A" game thing.  We also have Hannah's mother looking very suspect in the death of Det Wilden, so Hannah is trying her best to figure how her mother is tied to that.  In this week's episode we saw that Hannah's father's handgun, the same one used to kill Wilden, was found in her mother's luggage.  Her mother denied ever having the gun and said she didn't know how the gun got there.  The on-going storyline and tension between Aria and Ezra (Mr. Fitz) is still very apparent, although it appears she is trying to move on.  Funny enough, just as her mother exits the storyline, her brother re-enters it.  I haven't seen him on the show since like season 2, when he start tripping.  I guess he's back and stable, although he knows all about Aria's affair with Ezra and makes it very known to her that he does.  I'm not quite sure of his relevance to the entire storyline, but he still appears somewhat jaded, so that might come into play down the line.

Meanwhile, Emily is now off the school's swim team due to her shoulder injury.  That girl has the most unnecessary drama of the entire show.  Its like they try to make drama with a character that has none.  On the flipside, a new girl (not sure if she's into girls or not) has popped up on the scene as competition for Emily.  Both with swimming and personally.  This chick is now on the school's swim team after transferring, taking Emily's spot on the team.  This particular girl is extremely shady acting and its evident that there is some real tension between the two girls.  Now, back to Toby and Spencer, as they nearly travelled back in time on this week's episode, to seek out this housemother of a sorority that Allie had connections with.  I will tell you that this woman looked creepy as all get out!  I don't know if it was the lighting, actually I'm pretty sure it was the lighting, but she was CREEPY!  The town they went to was almost a Pleasantville-esque looking town, with old cars and was seen by us outside viewers as being in black and white or sepia at times.  Spencer sees the woman getting her hair done in a salon and barges in to ask her about Allie.  The woman is of no help and Spencer is sent along her merry way.  Upon leaving the salon, Spencer realizes music is playing and that everyone is going to this courtyard with a statue with flowers on it.  We don't know what this is about, but they see a girl they know from back in their hometown and start running to the car to follow.

Okay so back to Aria, her brother, and Ezra.  Aria is asked to look over a fellow students work, since she's know for being a good writer.  Her and this guy, who looks to be in the same grade as her or brother, are sitting on the couch and she's giving him her feedback, very platonically of course.  Next thing we know they finish up, he's leaving and he plants a kiss on her.  She tells him she's not interested in him like that and he leaves.  The next day at school Aria's brother comes up to her to scold her about hooking up with this guy.  She is stunned, knowing that this did not happen and immediately runs into the boy's lockeroom where this kid is and proceeds to tell him off.  He plays the jerk role and tries to make it appear as if she's lying and blasts her, saying that everyone knows about he affair with Ezra.

Overall, the season is pretty good and every episode leaves me wanting more.  I wonder how long they plan on dragging out the Red Coat character and who "A" is or isn't.  I feel like "A" changes with every season, and a new dynamic is added to the character, so that who "A" is can and probably will never be pinpointed.  That's the true beauty of a real cliffhanger...hat's off to the writers for contriving such poignant storylines with teenagers.

Until next time folks...

Baby This Weeks | 27 Weeks

27 Weeks

Alright party people, we are in for the home stretch!  This week officially marks the 3rd trimester, 27 weeks!  At least according to my What To Expect phone app, so I'm gonna go with that.  Either way we have reached a huge milestone with only 13ish weeks to go and I couldn't be more grateful.

Baby about 14.5 inches long and weighs just about 2 pounds. This week, baby's brain is developing quickly. Little one's eyelids, which have remained closed up until this point, begin to open, they actually started to open last week and now his retinas can begin to form. The retina contains specialized photoreceptor cells that respond to light, called rods and cones. Cones in particular help us perceive color.

Baby's skin is still wrinkly; but by 27 weeks, he or she basically looks how they will look when I give birth to them.  The sounds baby hears are muffled (thanks to the creamy coating of vernix covering those ears), he or she may recognize both mine and my husband's voices.  This is a good time for me (and Hubs) to read and even sing to baby (or rather, my belly)  Fun fact:  If Hubs presses his ear to your belly, he might be able to hear the baby's heartbeat.  Also, baby's taste buds are very developed now too (with more taste buds than he or she will ever have outside the womb, actually).

Baby - This little guy or girl is getting stronger by the day.  Baby is supposed to be on a sleep plan now, but appears to be awake a good portion of the day, especially in the morning now.  Seems like baby likes to sleep after we eat and in the early afternoon, but I can't really pinpoint it right now.  Although I do know they move in their sleep, so just because they're moving doesn't mean baby is actually awake, just that baby is active.  He or she appears to be a wild sleeper like me, if that's the case, lol!  Baby's kicks and movements are getting higher and higher, sometimes in my ribs, high on my sides, and high smack in the middle, under my sternum.
 Pregnancy Week 27

Me - I'm now at a whopping 137-139lbs (depending on what time of the day it is).  That means I'm about 13-15 lbs up from my pre-pregnancy weight of 124-126.  I think I have done a really good job gaining weight, well probably mostly baby, but hey that's what I'm supposed to be gaining.  That means with 13 weeks to go my overall weight gain should be around 26-28 lbs.  I know my PA wants me to gained between 30-35, but I'm totally content with the 25-30 lbs gain.  The last few days I have had some discomfort, which I think its mostly attributed to my uterus stretching and growing.  Today, Tuesday, so far I actually feel pretty good.  As I sit here and type this, I can feel little one kicking and jabbing me and it feels great!  No signs of pre-term labor, swelling, stretch marks, or anything else weird going on.  Rings are still on, but I'm growing out of my cammies super fast, so I think I will have to switch over to the maternity ones very soon.  My belly is really itchy, so I know its going and is measuring at around 33".  I fully expect that by the end of the week that it will measure around 34".

Hubs -  Doing good as usual.  He loves feeling the baby and even likes to provoke it at times.  I can say that I think this kid will totally get us back once its born, because we mess with it all the time. ;-) When I asked Hubs if my belly look bigger he always tells me yes, but sometimes I think he's just saying it to say it.  Nonetheless, he always brings the reality to the situation, reminding me when I say I'm fat, that I'm actually pregnant.  This guy's been through it with me and this pregnancy, so I give him props for being a real team player all the time.

Until next week folks....

Happy bumping!
